Description

Are you interested in growing food in your garden, reducing chemical usage in the management of garden pests, increasing the bio-diversity within your garden or how to attract good bugs and insects into your garden to help manage garden pest, then this is the Master Class for you.

This interactive Master Class on "Good Bugs / Bad Bugs" will be held at Collingwood College and include an identification walk and talk session in the original Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden. The workshop will introduce you to the world of Integrated Pest Management and how to attract predator insects to your garden to help manage garden pests.

What will be covered?

  • Insect ecology in the garden (presentation)
    • Introduction to insect life-cycles
    • Pests and types of pest damage in the garden
    • Predators and parasites of pests - the 'good bugs’ or ‘beneficials'
    • Pest / beneficial population dynamics:
      • When and where do pests and beneficials come from?
      • How do predator / prey cycles work?
      • How to discourage pests and encourage beneficials in the garden
  • Meet the 'good bugs’ (hands-on interactive session)
    • Learn how to use a hand-lens (avaliable for purchase)
    • Look at live / preserved samples of key beneficial insects and mites
  • Making pest management decisions (discussion based on participants’ questions about particular pests / scenarios)
    • How to find pests and beneficials
    • Detecting pests early, before a problem gets out of control
    • Are there enough beneficials, and will they work in time?
    • Non-disruptive pest control options for situations when there aren’t enough beneficials to get the job done

Master Class Presenters - Angelica Cameron and Yuki Cameron

  • Angelica Cameron -  Angelica has bachelor degrees in Agricultural Science and International Development. She works as an applied entomologist at IPM Technologies, where she has specialised in providing pest management advice to farmers across Australia, with an emphasis on supporting them to minimise their reliance on insecticides. Angelica is an enthusiastic educator - she enjoys teaching people about insect ecology and how to get the balance of pest and beneficial species right in crops and gardens. She lectures in plant protection at Melbourne University; regularly runs workshops and field days for farmers and their advisors; and has delivered a variety of programs for home gardeners and children interested in discovering the insect world. Angelica is also an award winning sustainable home gardener and has experience running a kitchen/garden program at her local primary school.
  • Yuki Cameron - Yuki is a highly experienced home, community and school gardener. She has an award winning sustainable home garden, is a founding member and volunteer co-ordinator of her local community garden, is a Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Class volunteer at Collingwood College. In 2015 she worked with Angelica to develop and deliver the highly successful ‘Good Garden Bugs’ workshop series at Buna Reserve Community Garden, and ever since she has been sharing her knowledge and passion for good bugs in the garden with the variety of gardeners that she interacts with.

Cancellation & Refund Policy

SGA’s Cancelation and Refund Policy

  • No refunds will be given for non-attendance.
  • If there are insufficient numbers for an event it may be cancelled or postponed by SGA. If this is the case, you will be notified and given the option of either a full refund or a transfer to a different SGA event of equivalent value.
  • Attendee initiated cancellations - Refunds will be issued for cancellations if you give at least 7 days notice prior to the start date. Refunds will be reduced by 1) a $10 SGA administration fee 2) WeTeachMe fees (if applicable) and 3) any financial transaction fees (if aplicable).
  • No refunds will be issued for cancellations with less than 7 days notice unless the event is successfully booked out, including the cancelled tickets.
